Auf der Konferenz Wikipedia - ein kritischer Standpunkt in Leipzig diskutieren Forscher verschiedener Wissenschaftsbereiche an diesem Wochenende die Funktion und Entwicklungen in der Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia. Am ersten Tag standen die Wikipedia als Politikum und die Politik in der Wikipedia im Vordergrund. Der Direktor der Leiziger Universitätsbibliothek Ulrich Johannes Schneider sieht in der Online-Enzyklopädie eine zwangsläufige Folge: "Enzyklopädien wollten immer ins Internet – in Büchern waren sie eigentlich immer falsch aufgehoben." Viele Probleme der Wikipedia seien aber keineswegs neu. So stritten bereits Pioniere wie Denis Diderot und Johann Heinrich Zedler darum, welche Artikel sie in ihre Werke aufnehmen wollten und wie das Wissen zu organisieren sei. Gemeinsam sei den Enzyklopädien jedoch die Orientierung am Leser: "Diese Werke bemühen sich, das Wissen auf eine gleichmäßige Entfernung zum Benutzer zu bringen."
