Learning disability and autism have been in the headlines this week, with report after report finding continued failings in the way people with learning disability and/or autism are cared for and supported. These reports raise serious questions about how people with complex needs are supported and engaged with and the focus, or the lack thereof, which we place on good communication.
This single case study reports the improvements in communication skills when the child made a transition from a communication book to an iPad speech generating app. Participant was a 7 year old child with multiple disability and CCN who was undergoing intervention using communication book and transited to an AAC app namely AVAZ. NHS England has launched a new video describing the important role allied health professionals (AHPs) play in improving care for patients, streamlining services and supporting other NHS staff.
The video explains how AHPs are crucial in providing a more joined up experience of care for patients across primary, community and hospital services, and ensuring services are sustainable over the next decade.
The collaborative aims to enable AHPs to lead improvement work across multiple disciplines and agencies, bringing a new perspective and focus to delivering solutions. Participants also had the opportunity to develop transferable skills in quality improvement.
This resource demonstrates the value and impact AHPs have on patient flow and shows examples of how trusts have staged interventions to reduce avoidable hospital admissions, patient length of stay and promote a home first approach.
Communication assessment of people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) has seldom been investigated. Here, we explore approaches and decision making in undertaking communication assessments in this group of people. A questionnaire was sent to UK practitioners. The aim of this study was to test the usefulness of the Cognitive and Language scales Bayley-III in the early assessment of cognitive and language functions in the context of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. This paper focuses on the application of the Bayley-III and studies the predictive value of the test result in children with ASD with different levels of verbal ability.

Purpose: The introduction of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems can enhance the participation of young children with complex communication needs. However, existing literature suggests that the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the child’s parent may prevent ongoing use of the AAC system.
