Over the past few months, the academic and scientific communities of Croatia have been voicing their displeasure with proposed revisions to the national legislation governing the country's universities and its science and higher education organizations. Critics have argued, for example, that the changes would take away university autonomy and freedom of scientific expression because universities and research priorities would come under direct governmental control.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov has outraged the academic community by his latest cost-cutting move to close the state's oldest scientific body, the Bulgarian Academy of Science.
Under the plan, which has been presented as a "restructuring" of the 141-year-old institution, the government would only continue to fund departments that directly serve the state, such as the meteorological and the seismological institutes. "The rest will join the universities," Mr Borisov said.
TEI By Example offers a series of freely available online tutorials walking individuals through the different stages in marking up a document in TEI (Text Encoding Initiative). Besides a general introduction to text encoding, step-by-step tutorial modules provide example-based introductions to eight different aspects of electronic text markup for the humanities. Each tutorial module is accompanied with a dedicated examples section, illustrating actual TEI encoding practise with real-life examples. The theory of the tutorial modules can be tested in interactive tests and exercises.
