The world’s top 50 universities in engineering and technology in 2013 do not include any Indian university/college. The Higher Education World Reputation Ranking 2013 of top 100 institutions, has representation from all the BRIC countries, except India. We can conveniently blame it on bias, or simply ignore the global ranking. While the Government-run institutions have their share of challenges, the private institutes/universities, perceived to be a ray of hope, appear to be less interested in improving quality.
In absence of any response shown by the private universities on issue of admission to technical courses, the MP Private Universities’ Regulatory Commission has decided that it would not conduct the admission process for universities this year.

Punjab's medical education and research department headed by minister Bhagat Chunni Lal has failed to formally decide whether to regularise the admissions of over 450 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course-2012 in 11 private colleges and allow them to sit in the first-year examination beginning on Wednesday.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has clarified that no university — Central, State, private or deemed — can offer programmes through ‘study centres’, even for the purpose of conducting courses through the distance mode.
The University Grants Commission has cautioned students that no university, whether Central, State, private or deemed can offer its programmes through franchisee arrangement with private coaching institutions even for distance mode courses. The commission in a recent notification advised students not to take admission in unapproved study centres, off campus centres, franchisee institutions, colleges / institutions claiming to be affiliated with private universities or deemed universities.
On the issue of setting up of 20 new private universities, Mr. Deshpande said a three-member official committee has been set up to monitor the availability of infrastructure and quality of education in private universities.
