Open access. In response to multiple United Kingdom investigations and inquiries into the care of adults with learning disabilities, Mencap produced the Getting it Right Charter which campaigned for the appointment of a Learning Disability Liaison Nurse in every hospital. More recent best practice guidelines from the Care Quality Commission included the need for all children’s units to have access to a senior learning disability nurse who can support staff and help them manage difficult situations. The UK has one of the highest child mortality rates in Western Europe: 4 in every 1000 children die before the age of 1 year, compared with 2 per 1000 children in Sweden. Likewise, the mortality rate of children aged 1–14 years in the UK is 10.4/100 000 children compared with 8.3/100 000 in Sweden.1 Since the UK has a universal healthcare system, and comparable levels of per capita incometo Sweden, a substantial proportion of deaths in children in the UK are likely to be preventable.
