Zusammenfassung

The essay focuses on the centrality of conversation in the work of James Carey as a gifted and generous contributor to the academic narrative on journalism and communication in society. Against rising pessimism about contemporary relations between media and society, Carey remained an idealist within the dominant system of meanings and values, who argued that a genuine process of conversation would secure the grounds for a democratic existence.
