In this account, the focus will be on the differential career stages of Leo Lowenthal and Elihu Katz and what that meant for their understanding of the mass culture critique. Three interrelated questions will be addressed: first, Lowenthal's preparation for his work at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt; then the Institute's transfer to Columbia and Lowenthal's role in developing a sociology of literature and popular culture; and finally, the implications of Lowenthal's mentorship of Katz at the beginning of his scholarly career.
