Equivalence, Synonymy, and Sameness of Meaning in a Bilingual Dictionary

Abstract

The aim of this paper is twofold. First, it examines the notions of (interlingual) equivalence and (intralingual) synonymy against the notion of sameness of meaning. Secondly, a more specific question is asked pertaining to bilingual lexicography: in what areas of the lexicon is one most likely to find target language equivalents truly identical in meaning with (particular senses of) source language headwords? Given the affinities between equivalence and synonymy, the search for answers is inspired by what lexical semantics has to say about the various types and functions of synonyms. A
