Abstract
When writing ethnographic fieldnotes researchers confront specific practical research challenges. They have to continually decide what to describe, in which words, and to what extent. In this article we focus on this selection process, which is inevitable in the course of observation and recording. After presenting and criticizing the methodological discourse, the authors introduce the principles of construction, which they reconstruct by comparing their own fieldnotes written in the context of their dissertation projects. Discussed are the overall form of the fieldnotes, the level of detail in which different elements of situations are described, and how the person of the researcher is represented in the data. With regard to particular principles of construction, the differences between the authors' styles of writing are reflected and legitimated methodologically. The article concludes with proposing a reflexive examination of writing as a constructive performance. Through discussing and comparing different styles of writing, estranging ourselves from our fieldnotes was initiated - a process that allows for reflection and learning. It is during this process when fieldnotes become "strangers." Beim Aufschreiben von Situationen und Handlungsabläufen entscheiden Forschende kontinuierlich, was sie wie ausführlich mit welchen Worten festhalten. Dieser beim Schreiben notwendige Selektionsprozess steht im Fokus des Artikels. Anknüpfend an den Stand methodologischer Diskussionen werden Konstruktionsprinzipien von Beobachtungsprotokollen vorgestellt, welche wir im Vergleich von Protokollausschnitten aus unseren Dissertationsprojekten entwickelten. Diskutiert werden die Gesamtgestalt der Beobachtungsprotokolle, der Detaillierungsgrad der Darstellung verschiedener Aspekte von Situationen sowie die differenten Repräsentationen der jeweiligen Forscherin im Datenmaterial. Unter Bezug auf ausgewählte Konstruktionsprinzipien werden anschließend die Unterschiede in den Schreibweisen methodisch reflektiert und begründet. Der Artikel schließt mit einem Plädoyer für eine reflexive Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Konstruktionsleistung des Schreibens. Durch einen diskursiven Vergleich mit den Schreibweisen anderer EthnografInnen wird ein "Fremdwerden" eigener Beobachtungsprotokolle ermöglicht und ein Reflexions- und Lernprozess angestoßen. En este artículo enfocamos este proceso de selección, que es inevitable en el transcurso de la observación y el registro. Después de presentar y criticar el discurso metodológico, los autores introducen los principios de la construcción, con los cuales reconstruyen comparando sus propias notas de campo, escritas en el contexto de sus proyectos de tesis. Se discute la forma general de las notas de campo, el nivel de detalle en los que se describen diferentes elementos de las situaciones, y cómo la persona del investigador se representa en los datos. Con respecto a los principios particulares de la construcción, se reflexionan y legitiman metodológicamente las diferencias entre los estilos de escritura de los autores. El artículo concluye al proponer un examen reflexivo de escritura como una actuación constructiva. A través de discutir y comparar diferentes estilos de escritura, se inició el distanciamiento de nosotros mismos con respecto a nuestras notas de campo – un proceso que permite la reflexión y el aprendizaje.
