Abstract

This study of community college (CC) transfer students, private junior college (PJC) transfer students, and native students in the upper divisions of three senior institutions in the University of North Carolina System (UNCS) found that: (1) CC transfer students earned significantly higher lower-division GPAs than did PJC transfer students and native UNCS students. The lower-division GPAs of PJC transfer students and native students were not significantly different. (2) Upper-division academic performance of transfer students was on par with that of native students. (3) There were no significant differences in academic performance when student groups were compared by academic major, gender, and age; significant differences were found when student groups were compared by lower-division GPAs. (4) Transfer shock was experienced by transfer students, with CC transfer students experiencing a greater degree of transfer shock than PJC transfer students. (5) African-American students were underrepresented (as compared to their numbers in the general population) in the populations of full-time students transferring to the senior institutions included in the study.
