Abstract
Summary report on the major points from the Workshop on Scientific Communication and Publishing in the Information Age, held in Oxford, 10-12 May 1999, reproduced with permission from the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP). The workshop concluded that, while there is much experience to share, problems of access, connectivity and general infrastructure are holding the scientific community back in many countries. Good electronic publishing requires wider access to appropriate skills and knowledge, and the importance of electronic publishing as a direct support for improvement of the quality of science needs to be recognised. There is a need for sustainable economic models for electronic publishing. The importance of collaboration and partnerships was emphasised. Presents a matrix to help countries plan their electronic publishing strategies.
