Abstract

Building a good content adaptation service for mobile devices poses many challenges. To help meet these challenges, this quality of service-aware decision engine automatically negotiates for the appropriate adaptation decision for synthesizing an optimal content version. The QoS-sensitive approach also complements the transcoding operations' lossy nature. The decision engine looks for the best trade-off among various parameters to reduce the loss of quality in various domains. Several quantitative methods are possible for measuring content version QoS in various quality domains. On the basis of the user's perception and other contextual information on the client's capabilities, the network connection, and the requested content, the negotiation algorithm determines a content version with a good aggregate score. A prototype adaptation system for PDF documents demonstrates this approach's viability.
