The European RHAPSODY project sought to develop and test an online information and support programme for caregivers of individuals diagnosed with young‐onset dementia. The objectives were to assess user acceptability and satisfaction with the programme, and to test outcome measures for a larger effectiveness study.. A wide range of themes are covered in the shared memory bags collection. The new bags cover themes including Countryside, Family Life, In the Garden and Funny Old World.
Shropshire Libraries worked with local partners to produce the latest bags. The Diocese of Lichfield’s Dementia Churches programme contributed knowledge, practical help and objects to the faith-based bag ‘Strength for the Journey.’ In Oswestry, two Welsh-speaking community groups provided funding for the bilingual ‘Land of My Fathers’ memory bag.

Members of Oswestry’s Trailblazers group had the opportunity last week (Friday 8 March 2019) to try out the newly-launched Shared Memory Bags from Shropshire Council’s library service.
Oswestry Library staff were at hand to demonstrate the Memory Bags with the group, who support people diagnosed with dementia, during their weekly catch up at the Whole Life Centre in Oswestry.

Using my clinical academic knowledge and understanding of dementia, with the library team provided the underpinning research based framework; we were able to highlight skills and understanding to enhance care, and support patients and staff in a more person centred approach.
dementia 3Our dementia volunteers all receive dementia care as part of their corporate training, and attend additional presentations about meal time support. There are opportunities to attend further sessions such as Sage and Thyme and Dignity Awareness. Evidence of their visits and input is recorded to capture the difference it is making and to be able to report back to Carers and Patients’ Experience (CAPE) board.
Shropshire Libraries is to launch five new Shared Memory bags at an event at Oswestry Library on Saturday 4 March 2017.
Largely funded by a grant from the Mary Hignett Bequest (administered by the Rotary Club of Oswestry), the new bags contain Pictures to Share books and tactile items to trigger memories and are designed to be easy to carry. They can be borrowed by those living with dementia for use at home or by those leading group reminiscence activities. Each bag is based on a theme and the featured topics are travelling, world of work, pets, childhood days, and sporting life.
This study presents an overview of recent research activities in assistive technology (AT) for people with dementia. Bibliometric studies are used to explore breadth and depth of different research areas, yet this method has not yet been fully utilised in AT research for people with dementia. DUDLEY and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust Libraries have recently completed a year-long pilot in which iPads were lent out to staff to use as a therapeutic resource with patients on hospital wards and in the community. As part of the pilot, Library Services worked in collaboration with the Trust’s Occupational Therapy Department, who recommended apps and trialled the project in practice, providing feedback and recommendations.
The Click Guide to Dementia has been developed to help people find out about these organisations, products, services and bloggers. The Click Guide to Dementia brings together more than a hundred of the most useful resources, with an overview and explanations as well as hyperlinks to websites, blogs, facebook pages and twitter feeds.
Topics covered in the Guide range from information, advocacy and carer support through to specialist dementia shops and services.

And they are looking for more knitters to join them.
So what are Twiddlemuffs?
A Twiddlemuff is a thick hand muff with trimmings such as ribbons, beads, buttons and zips attached to the inside and out, designed to combat restlessness and agitation in dementia patients by keeping their hands busy as well as stimulating the mind.
As part of Staffordshire Libraries’ activities for Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from Sunday 15 to Saturday 21 May, libraries are encouraging residents to join with them to produce Twiddlemuffs to be donated to local charities and dementia friendly groups.
