Major problems at a salt mine where 126,000 drums of radioactive debris are stored are fuelling public distrust of long-term waste disposal plans, reports Fred Pearce from Asse, Germany
Enough plutonium-bearing radioactive waste is stored here to fill 20 Olympic swimming pools. When engineers backfilled the chambers containing 126,000 drums in the 1970s, they thought they had put it out of harm’s way forever.
But now, the walls of the Asse mine are collapsing and cracks forming, thanks to pressure from surrounding rocks. So the race is on to dig it all up before radioactive residues are flushed to the surface.

Russia told U.S. it will not attend 2016 nuclear security summit
"The Russian Foreign Ministry said the proposed system of preparation for the summit eliminated the possibility that the opinions of states that do not agree "in everything with the line dictated by organizers" would be taken into account when an action plan for international organizations is developed at the summit.
"We do not see any possibility to take part in the preparations for the Fourth Summit on Nuclear Security," the ministry said in its statement.
"Instead, we intend to focus on efforts to strengthen cooperation in the framework of the IAEA, in particular on preparations for the next high-level conference (on nuclear security) under the auspices of the Agency, scheduled for 2016.""

A group of governments have submitted a draft UN General Assembly resolution to start negotiations on a treaty banning nuclear weapons. The document was circulated on Wednesday by its lead sponsors Austria, Mexico, South Africa, Ireland, Brazil and Nigeria and follows on from the recommendation of a UN Working Group, at which the overwhelming majority of states supported the call for ban treaty negotiations in 2017.
... The voting on the resolution will take place at the end of October or early November.
