Abstract

A number of possible adverse health effects related to ELF magnetic field exposure of adults have been studied in many areas of human health. According to scientific literature and international experts' reviews, no effect has been demonstrated to date for adults. However, there are still issues to clarify, particularly in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and other chronic diseases. An historical cohort of ELF MF exposed workers will be constituted and the health status of the subjects will be monitored and followed up using two indicators: long-term illness statements, number and cause of death after retirement. The data will be compared to nationwide data. The cohort will ideally include workers hired between 1978 and 20 I 0 with at least one year during their careers in jobs where exposure to 50 Hz MF is deemed to be high. The subjects will be included in the cohort at the date of their retirement. The exposure will be assessed on the base of the job title and will take into account the duration in the exposed jobs. Data will be collected annually from health insurance organizations for the long-term illness declaration, and from INSERM registers for mortality data. This analysis will look especially at neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancers.
