Abstract

Movement and activity are major components of patients with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD. However, studies on movement patterns are still rare. Therefore, we tested the Kinect system for measuring body movements in children with ADHD and controls sitting in front of an immersive projection display (Powerwall) during a rest period. Results showed that patients and healthy controls differed in their movement characteristics, especially regarding right arm movements and movements of the lower body which were more pronounced in ADHD patients. Additionally, ADHD patients showed faster leg movements. Movement speed was more irregular with respect to the right arm and the lower body as compared to controls. In addition, results verify that the Kinect system can be used to collect movement data of most body parts. The study could indicate specific movement patterns in ADHD patient. In the long run, results will help to develop diagnostic tools differentiating ADHD patients from healthy controls. Furthermore, results indicate that the Kinect full body tracking system is useful for the assessment of specific characteristics of hyperactivity.
