Abstract
Our nerve and muscle cells communicate using voltage-dependent four-domain sodium channels. A recent study in eukaryotic phytoplankton reveals that single-domain, prokaryote-like, voltage-gated Na(+)- and Ca(2+)-permeable channels are key to environmental sensing in the oceans.
